Meer as 100 Wes-Kaapse skole sal Maandag gesluit wees nadat ernstige stormweer groot dele van die provinsie getref het en die weerdiens waarsku dat nog verwoestende toestande in die komende dae voorlê.
’n Oranje vlak 8-weerwaarskuwing is onder meer deur die weerdiens uitgereik oor swaar reën, sterk wind en moontlike oorstromings.
Die gebiede wat die ergste geraak kan word, sluit die Breedevallei, Drakenstein, Stellenbosch en Witzenberg in, met bergagtige gebiede wat as besonder hoë risiko-sones beskou word.

David Maynier, die Wes-Kaapse LUR vir onderwys, het in ’n verklaring gesê skole in kring 3, 4, 5 en 6 Maandag gesluit sal wees weens die ernstige weerwaarskuwings vir gebiede soos Worcester, Ceres, Rawsonville, Tulbagh en die Hexriviervallei.
Hy sê 11 skole in die Eden- en Sentrale Karoo-onderwysdistrik sal ook Maandag gesluit bly weens die skade en probleme met toegang ná verlede week se storm.
Volgens Maynier sal alle ander skole oop wees tensy toestemming vir sluiting toegestaan word. Hy sê elke geval sal afsonderlik beoordeel word.
“Ons uitgangspunt is altyd om skole oop te hou en skole word net in uitsonderlike omstandighede gesluit, maar ons neem kennis van die erns van die weerwaarskuwings wat tans geld.
“Ons sal die situasie voortdurend monitor en evalueer om seker te maak skole kan so gou moontlik heropen.”
Hy sê alle skole behoort Dinsdag weer oop te wees.
